Thrills and Spills: Family Fun & Adventure

October midterm is all about creating unforgettable family memories, and Laois’s activity providers have truly excelled themselves.

Start your day crunching through fallen leaves at the Maize Maze, where a fun trip to the Maze is combined with a pumpkin patch letting you pick the perfect jack-o’-lantern to take home. For a full day of adorable animal encounters as well as a Halloween scare, it’s  open-air fun with plenty of indoor space.If you need to escape from the Irish weather, a visit to Castleview Open Farm is a must during the midterm. Solas Eco Garden is also hosting a special Haunted House event from 27th – 31st October, always a great day out.  

Another Halloween highlight is a free event at Emo Court where a trip to the historic servants quarters could have a spooky past (3pm on Oct 27th and 31st).

If you’re looking to burn off some steam, head for fantastic indoor fun! At the newly renovated Roll ‘n Bowl in Portlaoise, the children can dress up for a spooky roller disco and enjoy the dedicated Halloween activities on offer.

For a unique twist, wrap up warm and take the family to the water with Barrowline Trip Boat. Their “Scary Skipper” will sail you along the tranquil blue way, sharing spooky tales that are perfect for a crisp autumn afternoon on the river.

Our Unspoiled Outdoors: Crisp Air and Golden Views

No autumn trip to Laois is complete without pulling on your boots to breathe the crisp air of our unspoiled landscape. The Slieve Bloom Mountains are a kaleidoscope of burnished gold and rust in October, offering trails for every pace. Chase the roar of the magnificent, multi-tiered Glenbarrow Waterfall along the scenic riverside path, or climb to the unique boardwalk at the Ridge of Capard for breathtaking, panoramic views that stretch across the heart of Ireland.

Laois Libraries have a brilliant line-up of events this October for both children and adults. For those who love a good scare, we have two spine-tingling highlights:

Tales of Horror: Creative Writing WorkshopWed 23rd Oct, 6pm. Unleash your inner horror writer with local author F.B. Hogan. Learn how to craft chilling tales and spine-tingling stories in a fun, creative setting. Booking essential.

A Night of Ghost StoriesTues 29th Oct, 7pm. Join Emma from The Real Life Ghost Story Podcast and author/paranormal investigator Cormac Strain for an evening of truly eerie tales and haunting legends. Adults only. Booking required.
