August bank holiday brings us Stradbally Steam Rally and the Durrow Scarecrow Festival, A guaranteed weekend of fun for all the family. Our brand new Twin Trees Festival celebrating Heywood Gardens and 150 years birthday of Lutyens takes place later in August. Our new Power of Words Festival will take place in Abbeyleix featuring Laois's own Niamh Boyce and lots of inclusive accessible workshops. Bulfin Heritage Cycle will be meandering through the lanes of Laois on vintage bikes whilst learning about our counties heritage. well as 150 organised events there’s also the wonderful Laois countryside and attractions to see like The Rock of Dunamaise, Timahoe Tower, The Slieve Blooms, Abbeyleix Bog, Heywood Gardens, The Laois Garden Trail and so much more. Most are free and well worth exploring.

Ballinakill, Co. Laois will host its inaugural ‘Twin Trees’ festival this year with a strong focus on the ‘En Plein Air’ outdoor painting event, tutored by established artists Jock Nichol and Bridget Flannery. The festival is inspired by the 150thanniversary of Sir Edward Lutyens, the celebrated garden designer who created the exquisite formal garden at Heywood Gardens, minutes from the village of Ballinakill. The festival will take place during Heritage Week 2019, on August 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.

Emo Court is a country villa designed by architect James Gandon (1743-1823), best known for his great public buildings, including the Custom House and the Four Courts in Dublin. The house is a magnificent example of the neo-Classical style, reflecting the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland which were first laid out in the 18th century and contain formal lawns, a lake and woodland walks with many very fine trees and shrubs.
